Disseminating The Draft Constitution In Rift Valley
Through the National Youth Forum, Smart Citizens participated in a month's
process of the dissemination of the draft constitution to the youth in Rift
valley. Particular areas where the draft was disseminated were Nakuru, Eldoret
and Bomet.
Rift Valley Province is one of Kenya's seven administrative provinces outside Nairobi. The capital is the town of Nakuru. It is the largest and one of the most economically important provinces in Kenya. It accounts for over 20% of Kenya's population and is the most populous province in the country.
As at 2007, there were over 2.9 M registered voters in Rift valley out of the total 13M voters in Kenya. The process was a success. With a youth majority in its population and active political nature, this was a key area in the dissemination process. However, the process will only serve its purpose if adults turn out for the new voter registration and, ultimately, participate in the referendum which is scheduled in the next 60 days.
